10 March The Monday in the First Week of Lent
Bishop Emeritus Rev James Kwang Immanuel Methodist Church
Scripture: Joel 2:1-2, 12-17
1.Blow a trumpet in Zion;
sound an alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming; it is near, 2. a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness!
Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains a great and powerful people; their like has never been before, nor will be again after them through the years of all generations.
12.“Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; 13 and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.
14 Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink offering for the LORD your God?
15 Blow the trumpet in Zion; consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly;
16 gather the people. Consecrate the congregation; assemble the elders; gather the children, even nursing infants. Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her chamber.
17 Between the vestibule and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep and say, “Spare your people, O LORD, and make not your heritage a reproach, a byword among the nations.[a] Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”
1.Reflections on the Scripture
This passage from Joel is a powerful reminder of the urgency of repentance and God's boundless mercy. The people of Judah are called to return to God, recognizing their need for His forgiveness and restoration. As we journey through Lent, we are invited to reflect on our own hearts and lives, confronting areas where we may have strayed from God—whether through actions, attitudes, or neglect in worship. Like Judah, we too can become distant from God, caught up in the busyness of life or distracted by our own desires.
The call to "return to the Lord" is not just about turning away from sin, but about embracing a renewed relationship with God, one grounded in His grace, compassion, and patience. Joel reminds us that God is "gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in love." He desires our hearts to be fully His and is always ready to forgive those who sincerely repent. Lent is the perfect time to seek God’s forgiveness, knowing that when we return to Him, He will extend His love and mercy. Let us approach this season with humility and faith, trusting that God's mercy will meet us where we are and lead us to restoration.
2. Prayer in response
O Lord, our mighty refuge, we rest in Your unshakable love and protection. In times of fear and uncertainty, we trust that You are our constant shelter. You are our strength and deliverer, always faithful to keep us safe. We thank You for Your mercy, grace, and peace. When trials surround us, we will stand firm, knowing You are with us. We praise Your name and seek Your guidance, for You will never abandon us. In Your loving care, we find our rest. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
3. Application
Lent is a time to reflect on our relationship with God, recognizing where we may have drifted from Him. Joel’s call to repentance invites us to examine our hearts, acknowledging areas where we need God’s healing and forgiveness. Repentance is not only about turning from sin, but about embracing His grace, which restores and renews. This Lenten season offers us the chance to surrender our burdens to God, trusting that His mercy will meet us in our weakness. Let us return to Him with humility, allowing His forgiveness to bring peace and transformation to our lives.
