14 March The Friday in the First Week of Lent
(Bishop Emeritus Rev James Kwang Immanuel Methodist Church)
Scripture: Luke 4:1-13
4 And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the
wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” 5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” 9 And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ 11 and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” 12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.
Reflections on the Scripture
Luke 4:1-13 recounts the powerful moment when Jesus, filled with the Holy Spirit, was led into the wilderness, where He fasted for forty days and was tempted by the devil. This passage teaches us important lessons about faith, obedience, and the power of God’s Word in overcoming temptation.
The devil’s temptations targeted Jesus’ physical needs, His mission, and His relationship with God. First, he challenged Jesus to turn stones into bread, appealing to His hunger. But Jesus responded, “Man shall not live on bread alone” (Luke 4:4), emphasizing that spiritual nourishment is more important than physical needs. Next, the devil offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship, but Jesus rejected worldly power, affirming that only God is worthy of worship. Lastly, Satan tempted Jesus to test God’s protection by throwing Himself from the temple, but Jesus refused, declaring, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test” (Luke 4:12).
Jesus overcame these temptations through the power of Scripture and unwavering trust in God. As we walk through our own spiritual battles, we, too, must rely on prayer, faith, and God’s Word. This Lenten season calls us to draw closer to God, resist temptation, and trust in His divine strength.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, just as You overcame temptation in the wilderness, help us to stand firm against the trials we face. When we are weak, be our strength; when we are tempted, remind us of Your truth. Fill us with Your Spirit so that we may rely on God’s Word and trust in His promises. Teach us to seek You above all things and to walk in obedience to Your will. May this Lenten season draw us closer to You, deepening our faith and dependence on Your grace. We trust in Your guidance and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Application
Luke 4:1-13 teaches us how to resist temptation and rely on God, making it a powerful guide for the Lenten season. As Jesus fasted and prayed in the wilderness, He showed us the importance of spiritual discipline. Lent calls us to reflect on our own struggles with temptation and turn to God for strength. Through fasting, we confront our desires; through giving, we overcome selfishness; and through prayer, we deepen our trust in God. By embracing these practices, we grow spiritually and prepare our hearts to celebrate Christ’s victory over sin and death at Easter.
