The Salvation of One,

The Salvation of All

v  Siew Lee

“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved — you and your household.”                                    (Acts 16:31, NIV)

I was born in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia, the only daughter in a family with three older brothers and two younger brothers. My father had spent most of his life in business, embodying the traditional Chinese work ethic of perseverance through hardship, and had weathered his share of storms in his career. My mother was widely regarded as a wise housewife. Our family was once bound by traditional beliefs and all kinds of harmful habits, yet under God's wondrous guidance, each of us was transformed one by one. Looking back now, I see marks of grace at every turn.

I. My Father

My father was a property developer who also built many roads, and he was considered a successful businessman in Miri. He was loyal, family-oriented, a responsible husband and father. But under the crushing weight of years of work-related stress, his temperament became exceedingly volatile. Before coming to faith, he carried a deeply ingrained chauvinism and frequently erupted in anger, making the atmosphere at home perpetually tense. As children, we always tiptoed around him, terrified of triggering his fury.

In the late 1990s, an economic crisis swept the globe, and Malaysia was not spared. It was the first time my father had ever experienced such profound helplessness: his capital chain collapsed, his business teetered on the brink, and he had to borrow money from friends everywhere he turned. During those dark days, a brother in Christ named Brother Jiang — who had been looking for opportunities to share the gospel with my father for years — not only lent him money to get through the crisis but also prayed for him without ceasing. Deep down, my father had long harboured a desire to seek God. Through years of impotence, seen how helpless people are in times of trouble, and recognised that there existed a supernatural power beyond human control that instead governed all things.

However, because my mother's I-Kuan Tao faith required vegetarianism, and my father absolutely adored pork trotters and all kinds of meat, he was unwilling to give up his dietary freedom for any religion. For that reason, he had never followed my mother into the temples, nor had he ever opened his heart.

Then in 2000, when my father clearly learned from Brother Jiang that believing in Jesus did not require giving up meat — that he could eat anything — the burden and hesitation in his heart instantly vanished. He gladly received the gospel Brother Jiang shared and began attending church services. I was the first child to follow my father to church. My mother, however, still clung to I-Kuan Tao and coldly threw these words at my father: "You walk your own plank, and I'll walk my own path."

II. My I-Kuan Tao Mother

“Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods。”                                        (Galatians 4:8a NIV)

My mother was a devoted follower of I-Kuan Tao, a lifelong vegetarian, and the idols and ancestral tablets on the family altar burned with incense all year round. She worshiped not only ancestors and the local earth god but also various regional deities, making long pilgrimages to make vows and repay them during festivals. In her view, one must worship every "god" because surely one of them would answer; even if most failed to help, at least one would prove powerful enough to keep her safe. As the only daughter, I was influenced by my mother and even joined her in vegetarianism for two years.

Yet that syncretistic worship also exposed our family to dark spiritual attacks. Only years later did I understand that it was the defilement my mother had incurred spiritually that brought calamity upon us. Someone put a curse on her — they killed a small black dog, placed it in a cardboard box, and wrote my mother's name in dog blood along with a vicious curse wishing her a terrible death. That box, dumped outside our gate, caused my mother's physical and mental health to deteriorate rapidly. I was still unmarried at the time and witnessed firsthand how her temperament changed drastically — she became irrationally volatile and almost impossible to reason with. Soon after, her body began to fail her: during a bath, one side of her body suddenly went numb, and she was later diagnosed with a mild stroke. Though she eventually regained basic function after treatment, that half of her body remained perpetually numb, as if encased in a thick shell.

After my father converted, my mother stubbornly clung to I-Kuan Tao. The couple's religious differences sparked frequent arguments — fights every two or three days, major blowouts nearly every five — and our home was rarely at peace. My mother lived in numbness and unease, continuing to search among all kinds of idols for the peace she could not seem to find.

III. Brothers Ensnared in Harmful Habits

My five brothers grew up under my father's violent temper and absorbed his intensity, developing similarly fiery dispositions. They were not only addicted to cigarettes but also entangled in other harmful habits, spewing profanities at every turn and occasionally squandering money on gambling. The atmosphere at home often plummeted to freezing point, and their marriages teetered on the edge because they neglected their wives for gambling. Family relationships were strained, with arguments and silent treatments ever-present.

Back then, our boisterous, extended family seemed shrouded in a thick, ominous gloom: my father living in rage, my mother seeking false peace in fear, and my brothers wasting their lives in smoke and gambling dens. I watched it all, my heart breaking, yet powerless to change anything. No one could have imagined that an unbelievable healing was about to tear a crack through all that darkness.

IV.The Unbelievable Healing

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”             (Ephesians 2:8, NIV)

At the end of 2000, my husband, Shi and I immigrated to Australia through the skilled migration program. In 2001, I became pregnant with our first daughter, due in mid-June.

My mother arrived in Perth from Miri on May 1st to be with me for the delivery. She still worshiped everything at that time, believing that surely one god would come through, willing to try anything — after all, what was the harm in adding one more? So during her time in Australia, she gladly attended services and women's fellowship meetings at Kingsway Methodist Church (KMC).

That May, a Pastor from Sarawak, Rev Lu came to KMC to conduct healing and deliverance ministry. My mother happened to be present that day and was encouraged to go up on stage to receive prayer for healing and deliverance. I sat in the congregation, watching as my mother knelt on stage. Under Rev Lu's prayer, her body began to sway violently back and forth — given her age and physical condition, the intensity was almost unimaginable. I feared such vigorous shaking would cause her to fall and injure herself; my heart was in my throat, but since I was caring for my daughter, I couldn't go up to steady her. I could only watch intently. As my anxieties swirled, I saw her collapse on stage amid the prayers of the pastor and the congregation. My mind reeled - yet everyone around me was either singing hymns loudly or weeping, showing no sign of concern.

Later, my mother slowly got up on her own, entirely unharmed. On the way home, she told me that while on stage, she had genuinely felt the love of Jesus — a warmth that wrapped around her searching heart and filled her with indescribable emotion and joy.

That very night, as my mother lay in bed, she suddenly felt a powerful current-like energy surge through her entire body, and the numb half of her body instantly regained sensation. She didn't know what was happening, but she instinctively reached out her right hand to touch her left, and was overjoyed to find that all her limbs had regained feeling and strength, responding to her commands. She soon realised that the healing was complete—as if she had never suffered a stroke at all. The miracle arrived quietly that night, leaving my mother, who had spent years worshipping all manner of "gods," unable to deny the reality of this living Lord. Overwhelmed with excitement and gratitude, she could not sleep all night and resolved to set aside all doubt and accept Jesus as her Saviour.

V.The Salvation of One, The Salvation of All

“...he and his whole household were filled with joy because they had come to believe in God.”                                        (Acts 16:34b, NIV)

After receiving her healing, my mother immediately made an overseas call to my father in Miri, excitedly recounting the miraculous work that had happened to her, and urged him repeatedly to tear down all the idols and shrines in the house and invite the local pastor to help with the cleansing. Thus, both our homes in Miri and Perth experienced God's purifying and transforming power. On our side in Perth, several sisters from KMC, together with Rev Chiew and Mrs Chiew, actively shared the gospel with us, planting the truth into our hearts little by little. When Rev Chiew and Mrs Chiew came to conduct my baptism lessons, my husband Shi — who had not yet received salvation — sat beside me and listened in. God moved in his heart, and by the end of the course, he was willing to be baptised, upgrading my life partner into a heavenly companion.

My mother's transformation was like seed sown on good soil, yielding thirty, sixty, even a hundredfold. After she returned to Malaysia, she went to each family member, testifying of the Lord Jesus' power. God had begun a good work. The idols that had stood in our home for decades were completely removed — and from my father, brothers, and sisters-in-law, to nephews, nieces, grandchildren, and all their spouses and descendants — our entire family of over thirty people, not one missing, all came to believe in the Lord Jesus.

One by one, my brothers quit smoking, stopped gambling, and stopped cursing. My father was completely transformed, his heart filled with love, often moved to tears — no longer the man who slammed tables and roared. Today, my second and third brothers and my younger brother all serve as deacons at Miri Gospel Chapel Tukau, and family members take part in music ministry in various roles—pianists, drummers and so on. My younger brother's twin sons, while studying bakery in Taiwan, often served in the local community and led people to the Lord. After graduation, they started their own business and have been greatly blessed, regularly organising their staff to travel to remote areas to donate supplies to indigenous tribes and bring the gospel to them. Even my eldest brother, who has not fully kicked his smoking habit, has experienced a radical transformation. My sisters-in-law all serve in the church choir, and the couples enjoy sweet, enduring relationships. Our extended family, spanning generations, now worships the Lord together in harmony and joy.

VI.He Chose Us Before We Knew Him – A Postscript

“For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”       (Colossians 1:13-14, NIV)

Through these years of worshiping the true God, our family has grown increasingly in our understanding and reception of the ways of God's grace. As we look back over our life experiences, we often have those "aha" moments: So that was God at work! For instance, we frequently recall an incident that, at the time, we didn't understand. Only in hindsight did we realise that even before we knew the Lord, He had already chosen us.

It was 1993, and I had just returned to Miri after completing my hairdressing and beauty training in Taiwan. My father bought a vacation home in Kuching, and our family set out in a four-wheel-drive from Miri in the north to Kuching in the south. The roads were terrible back then, and the journey took over ten hours. It was just past 5am in the morning, the sky barely light, when my second brother joked from the passenger seat: "If I gave you ten thousand ringgit, would you dare to go to the 19-Mile Waterfall at this hour?"

The 19-Mile Waterfall was a local scenic spot—beautiful, but deep and treacherous, with multiple drownings every year. Local legend held that the area was haunted by restless spirits. The moment those words left his mouth, a chill seemed to seep into the car.

My third brother was driving at about 100 km/h. Because it had rained for days, the road was covered with thick yellow mud that had washed down from the mountains. Suddenly we spotted a white car overturned by the roadside. My third brother tensed and tried to slow down, but the car had already lost traction on the muddy surface. The moment he hit the brakes, the steering wheel and handbrake became completely useless. The vehicle spun wildly across the road in a terrifying skid, mud slamming against the undercarriage with a deafening roar. My third brother cried out in tears: "It's too late!"

The out-of-control car hurtled toward the cliff on the right. My mother screamed, "Heavenly God, protect us!" At that instant, an invisible force slammed down on the back of the vehicle like a giant hand pressing on its rear, and the car came to an impossibly abrupt halt. We looked closely and saw our headlights shining directly onto the rock face—the cliff was right beside us. Apart from my second brother's bruised arm, everyone else was unharmed, though shaken.

God gave us another sign of His grace. After we had calmed down and continued our journey, when we stopped for breakfast at a place called Batu Niah , we discovered a long reed wedged into the back of our car, carried all the way from the site of our close call.

Knowing we had been only a hair's breadth from plunging off that cliff, our hearts overflowed with gratitude for our deliverance. When we reached Sibu, my mother suddenly called out my name, her eyes fixed on the sky, her face frozen, pointing at the clouds but unable to speak. After she recovered, she said she had seen a smiling face in the white clouds. She thought it was "Maitreya Buddha," the deity she believed in at the time, and my young niece said she saw it too. What I saw was that cloud hovering above a Methodist church. Only years later, after our whole family had received grace, did we understand: that was not "Maitreya Buddha" — it was the protection of angels.

On our return journey, when we passed that dangerous spot again, we looked down at the cliff on the left and saw that below lay a deep, vast pool of water. If the car had gone over, there would have been no chance of survival. Our whole family was gripped by fear so intense we nearly wept — yet our hearts were filled with awe and unspeakable gratitude.

Finale: A Loving Couple on the Heavenly Road

“When you heard about Christ and were taught in Him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”(Ephesians 4:21-24,NIV)

After the entire family came to faith, my father and mother walked together through many more years. Now in their eighties, they are blessed with grace, growing even more devoted to each other. With the Lord Jesus in their lives, they have been completely renewed, truly embodying the love described in 1 Corinthians 13 — becoming gentle, patient, kind, and forgiving.

My father was deeply blessed in his later career, with various business endeavors continuing to expand and thrive under God's guidance. After he retired, he handed the business over to my brothers, and God continued to pour out abundant grace, blessing each of our families' work so that we have no worldly worries and can wholeheartedly worship the Lord together. My father now frequently accompanies my mother on travels. They are inseparable, holding hands wherever they go, like a pair of young lovers.

Every evening they study the Bible together, learning the Lord's Word. My mother has always been deeply grateful for coming to know the Lord, having completely abandoned the idol worship that God detests, and she testifies to others at every opportunity. She knows well the difficulty of emerging from darkness into light, and understands that her life matters — and more importantly, her relationship with God matters. So they read Scripture and have devotions together daily, encouraging one another and growing together spiritually. Two years ago they finished the New Testament and turned back to the Old; recently they began again from Genesis, reading book by book, and have now reached Jeremiah. They plan to restart the New Testament once they finish the Old. At their own pace, they read four chapters each day and share with each other afterward.

God has granted our family not only joyful, harmonious relationships but also opportunities to testify for Him in various fields, bringing glory to His name.

Because of his contributions to the local community, my father was selected as one of "Miri's 20 Outstanding Legendary Figures" and has served as a Chinese community leader, chairman of the Hakka Association, leader of the Chamber of Commerce, and adviser to the Builders' Association. His love for Christ and his faith exert a positive influence in our community. The man who once lived only for profit and rage now radiates joy and humility before everyone. The way my parents love and submit to one another sets the most beautiful example of marriage for the younger generation.

Today, the bond between us siblings is deep; we gather often and serve God together. Seeing my parents so loving in their later years, and our whole family united in serving the church, my heart overflows with gratitude. Every step of this journey has been prepared and protected by God. Truly: The salvation of one brings blessing to the entire household; He chose us before we ever knew Him.

All glory to our Father in heaven. Hallelujah, Amen!

Every testimony carries the power of the Lord's love, and each one has the potential to strengthen and illuminate a life. After reading, please share it with seekers, save it for future reference, or return it to the church for proper collection. Please do not discard it.

For an electronic version, please contact Rev Su.

All brothers and sisters are warmly invited to share their own life testimonies. "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light." (Luke 8:16) If you feel moved to share your testimony, please reach out to Rev Su or Rev Chiew to submit your account or arrange an interview.              Together we share in heavenly grace, together we are used by the Lord. Amen!
